A couple of days back I read Micheal Crichton's scifi novel "Prey" yet again. The story is the usual MC stuff, the only difference being it is on nanotechnology. The story is good, worth reading if u're an MC fan like me. However, there was one para in the introduction that really caught my attention;
"The fact that the biosphere responds unpredictably to our actions is not an argument for inaction. It is, however, a powerful argument for caution, and for adopting a tentative attitude toward all we believe, and all we do. Unfortunately, our species has demostrated a striking lack of caution in the past. It is hard to imagine that we will behave differently in the future.
We think we know what we are doing. We have always thought so. We never seem to acknowledge that we have been wrong in the past, and so might be wrong in the future. Instead, each generation writes off earlier errors as the result of bad thinking by less able minds - and then confidently emabarks on fresh errors of its own.
We are one of only three species on our planet that can claim to be self-aware, yet self-delusion may be a more significant characteristic of our kind. "
How true. Man's arrogance and selfishness with his full-blown stupidity is shuttling the world towards the brink of extinction. But little do we realise that. We think that all the advances we make, both scientifically and technologically, is for the betterment of the human race, for the betterment of the world. In that stupidity we fail to realise the fact that we are but mere streaks in God's vast expanse of creation, that we are dependent on a whole lot of other factors. We destroy the nature around us in the name of advancement and in the process destroy ourselves.We are pathetic.
The first thing that went thru' my mind as I read was this was wht Agent Smith in Matrix says and I completely agree with him too.
"Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you are a plague."
I do not believe in the matrix other than it being a figment of our imagination, but I sincerely do believe amd agree to what agent Smith says. We are a cancer to the balanced equilibrium of the Earth. A plague to the nature around us. It is upto us to realise that fact and start doing something about it.
